NBC Universal

NBCUniversal is known as the largest entertainment company in the world. While working for NBCUniversal it was my responsibility to address UX/UI needs for all the brands under the NBCUniversal umbrella. This made many of the projects much more complicated as the needs of each network were very different, but it also forced us to create some amazing products.

User Testing

After the client and engineering gave their stamp of approval on the prototype, we moved right into user testing. During these sessions the users are given a script and asked to run through each step. While they are making their way through the script, myself and the rest of the team take notes on how the test is progressing and if the user is having trouble. We also make sure to record the users screen, voice, and facial expressions so that after the test we can revisit the videos and record any additional data. Once the test is completed we proceed to ask the users follow up questions and then synthesize all of our data.

Wireframe & Prototype

Next, after getting approval from all parties involved in the project on the wireframes we began prototyping each component of a project. These prototypes were very detailed which not only set and expectation on the client’s end, but also provided a thorough example of both design and code for the engineers once it goes moves to production. Throughout building the prototype we met with the clients constantly to ensure they are pleased with the design and functionality.

Ideate

Once we have gathered all our data the next task was to ideate and find solutions to meet the client's needs. Sitting in a room together we would iterate until the best solution was found.

Get To Know The User

After understanding the process as a whole its is important to get a bit more granular by understanding each user’s needs. Whether it was an internal project or and external project we always made sure to understand the needs of each user as well as their process. Once we gathered all our data we were able to create a digestible interactive website which would indicate the steps that each user took, they’re empathy level, and their pain points with possible opportunities for improvement.

Understanding The Process

Once understanding what the brands wanted it was important to then learn their current process. This was always done by meeting with members from all brands and recording the sessions. First we would identify the whole process from start to finish. The goal was to understand the current workflow of each member of the team and what can be improved. Finally we would synthesize our findings and present them in a digestible manner.

Discovery & Competitor Research

Before getting started on any project it is important to understand the needs of your users. With that in mind we began with interviewing as many users as possible from all NBCUniversal brands to ensure that we met all their requirements. After meeting with all the brands and understand their requirements, we then would research our direct competitors and see how they may have addressed similar issues. Once this is completed we synthesized all our information to make it more digestible for both our internal team as well as the networks in which we were presenting to.
